The activity of golf
is a natural for the islands making up the Azores group. With the
temperate weather year around, the breathtaking views of sea and
mountains in every direction, even the most avid golfer will find
it difficult to keep their mind on the next stroke.
São Miguel
Golf on the
island of São Miguel can be enjoyed at the Azalea golf course. The
course offers 27 holes in all which can be played in different combinations
to make up an 18-hole game. The course features scenic panoramas
of the sea and the view of scenery through the trees is awesome.
The course is located out of Ponta Delgada toward Capelas. It features
a par 72 course with a driving range, two putting greens, a chipping
green, a pro shop, restaurant and bar. The course was engineered by
Cameron & Powell in 1996. Course record set on 2001 on the
yellow tees is 66 and a 67 in 2002 on the white tees. Several hotels
such as Hotel Ponta Delgada and Hotel Talisma offer golf packages.
Cedars
Golf Course, or the Furnas course, also on the island of São Miguel,
was originally designed by Mackenzie Ross, famous Scottish architect,
as a 9-hole course in 1939 and skillfully extended to 18 holes in
1986 by Cameron Powell so that it appears to be one unified course.
It’s located in the Furnas valley about 40 miles from Ponta Delgada
with its famous mineral hot springs and lush tropical vegetation.
Lake Furnas is nearby. The views from the Japanese Cedar tree-lined
course are awesome. Most of the greens are slightly elevated which
makes this course a bit more challenging than some. The course record
stands from a 1997 round played with a score of 66. It’s a par 72
course with a restaurant and bar, pro shop, chipping green and 2 putting
greens in addition to the driving range. Discount golf accommodations
at the Hotel do Colégio or the Hotel Holiday Inn are available in
Ponta Delgada.

Terceira
The eighteen-hole par 72 course
north of Angra do Heroísmo is considered the easiest to play of the
three courses in the Azores. It has wide fairways and uncomplicated
bunkers. The pro shop is well stocked with reasonably priced golf
accouterments. The course has a putting green, driving range, pro
shop, restaurant and bar. Two nearby tennis courts make the facility
extra attractive. The Hotel Terceira Mar offers discount golf accommodations.
This four-star resort hotel is worth the trip to the Azores just to
enjoy the beautiful rooms, excellent service and fine dining. The
hotel is located only 15 kilometers away from the Terceira Golf Course.
The
nice thing about choosing one of the golf vacation packages is the
variety of courses which you can access. Usually the discount programs
offer special rates and incentive programs, and you’ll feel like a
club member when you receive your “Member for the Day Program” membership.
